looking back on 2009

In 2009, I continued working on the series featuring identical ballet girls, the Smurfs series, and the caravan series. The paintings of the girls were intended to represent dream worlds, hence the clouds and flowers floating freely in space. For the Smurfs, I drew on my experiences in the office. Before I went to art school, I studied Business Economics and worked full-time in an office for several years. When I see people going about their business and imagine that we go through life as Smurfs, I find that it puts things into perspective. I painted a number of paintings with Smurfs in an office setting and a number in which they perform typical weekend activities, such as having breakfast with the newspaper, shopping, cooking and running. For the office paintings, I really enjoyed painting ring binders, post-its, plants with hydro granules and Smurfs behind a computer.
