On the road with origami

Last week, I set off in a car full of paintings to visit people who were interested in my work. Just a few weeks ago, they were still busy renovating their house, and now that it was finished, it was time for something beautiful on the wall.

It quickly became clear that the swan was the obvious choice. With the hares, it was a matter of figuring out which combination and look appealed most. Colourful or more subdued? The choice fell on the red and blue hares.

I painted the swan a few years ago at the invitation of Museum Belvédère, to mark the 50th issue of their magazine. The hares are part of a whole series; the hare seems the most ‘photogenic’ of all the origami animals so far and can be painted well from every angle.

When my work is sold from an exhibition or from my studio, I often have no idea where it will end up hanging. Buyers often send a photo once it’s hung; after all those hours I’ve spent working intensively on a painting, the circle feels more complete for me when I can see where the work ultimately ends up. Visiting people’s homes and seeing the paintings in situ isn’t always possible or necessary, but when it happens from time to time, it’s certainly special.
