Looking back on 2016

When sorting through the work I created in 2016, I noticed that this year work was loose sand; work that wasn't really part of a series. At the end of 2015, I moved from a house in the countryside, in Westernieland in the north of the province, to a house in the city of Groningen. A house that needed a lot of work. My studio moved to the Biotoop, the creative hub in Haren. There, too, a lot of work needed to be done. Perhaps it's this restlessness that's reflected in my work. Perhaps I was simply tired of the previous series, and temporarily there were only isolated new ideas, a transitional phase before a new period. The fact is, at the end of the year I created this painting: a postcard taped to the wall with a painting of myself on it. This work was the beginning of a series I've been working on for years. In a future post, I'll outline the context of this series.
